Welcome (back) to the David C. Shapiro Memorial Law Library at NIU College of Law! Whether you're a 1L who's just getting started or someone who's been visiting the library for years, there's almost certainly something we have to offer that's new to you!
Want to use a whiteboard? There are plenty to choose from! Each study room has a built-in whiteboard, and there are several free-standing boards in the central area of the Law Library, which can be wheeled around the Library as needed. The North Wing also has three rolling whiteboards. Most of the whiteboards include an eraser, either on a built-in shelf or magnetically attached. Stop by the Circulation Desk to borrow a few whiteboard markers. Once you're finished, return the whiteboard supplies to where you found them, and please report any dry or damaged markers to the Circulation Desk staff.
Getting tired of sitting around studying? Try a standing desk! The Law Library has three FitDesks, which can be placed on any existing table or carrel to turn it into a standing desk. The leg heights are adjustable, and the desks will accommodate both laptops and books. The FItDesks can be used anywhere in the Library and, unless recently used elsewhere, may be found on the wall counter near the Law Journals.
If your laptop isn't working or was left at home, you're welcome to borrow a Law Library laptop for temporary use. The checkout period is four hours, and you can take the laptop to class or for study sessions anywhere in Swen Parson Hall. The laptops are regularly maintained and updated by COLIT, and they already have ExamSoft installed for midterms or finals.
You may find that your preferred study spot is far from an outlet, but not to worry--the Law Library also lends extension cords! We also have a small circulating collection of other electronics and accessories for short-term loans, including a USB disc drive (to play CDs and DVDs), a selection of phone chargers, and digital video cameras.
Need to take a break from studying? The Law Library has many options for you, from bags to board games to coloring and craft supplies. You're welcome to browse our selection of games and activities for in-library use: they're stored on the shelves directly opposite the main entrance. You can also find a Zen sand garden on a nearby table, and a chess set in an alcove off the North Wing.
If you need private space for prayer, meditation, or lactation, you may be aware of Room 259A, a specially designated room just off the North Wing where you can spend up to 30 minutes of quiet time alone. You'll find yoga and prayer mats there, along with relaxing lighting and a white noise machine. Feel free to book a designated time there or drop in to recharge.
Do you have legal research questions? Our friendly law librarians would be happy to make an appointment or just take a moment to answer your questions during regular office hours. Many of our Circulation Desk staff are also law students who can help you with navigating the law school, as well as finding resources.
Of course, we also have books: the library houses or hosts tens of thousands of print and digital study materials and legal research sources. Feel free to ask a librarian or Circulation Desk staff for help with anything you might need: we're all here to help!
