Welcome back to the Law Library for the spring semester!

Visiting the Library

Throughout this semester, our public access hours are:

  • Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m
  • Saturday and Sunday: closed

Current law students can use their OneCards to access the Law Library during extended hours:

  • Monday through Sunday: 6 a.m. to midnight

Please note: these hours are subject to change on holidays, during breaks, or if there is a University-wide pivot to virtual services. In any of these situations, check out the library's homepage for the latest access updates.

Using our Materials

Did you know your OneCard can be used to check out books and other materials in the Law Library and all the University Libraries? Current NIU students, faculty, and staff can use their IDs to check out any circulating materials at all the libraries' circulation desks, and many locations include a self-check machine. Learn more about using our Meescan self-check here in the Law Library.

Not a currently affiliated with NIU? You can still use our materials! Students, faculty, and staff from I-Share partner institutions can check out circulating items in-person or place requests online, but all public patrons are welcome to read and make scans of any print materials in the collection during public access hours. If you are an alum of the College of Law, you can sign up for a free library card, and local bench and bar members can apply for a fee-based library card as well. For more information on what types of access are available, review our circulation policies.

Asking Questions

Do you have a question about the library, its policies, or the services we offer? While you're always welcome to stop by and ask in person, feel free to call our Circulation Desk during public access hours at 815-753-0507 or send an email to lawlib@niu.edu. We'll be happy to answer your question or direct you to other resources.

What about if you need help with a research question or a law school assignment? You are welcome to stop by in person or send an email to lawreference@niu.edu, but if you are a current law student, your best bet is to set up an appointment with a librarian for one-on-one assistance. By default appointments are virtual and the calendar shows all librarians' availability. But if you prefer, you can select a specific librarian using the dropdown menu or can request an in-person appointment. However you reach the Law Library, we'll be happy to help!
