As the end of the fall semester approaches, here are a few resources you may be thankful to know more about:
Did you know the library has study pods? These single-person study spaces feature a comfy seat with high sides to block out distractions, plus a built in desk area. There are three of these pods around the central area and in the South Wing, so feel free to get settled in one anytime you'd like a semi-private workspace.
When you need a room to yourself on a short term basis, don't forget about the Meditation, Prayer, and Lactation room! Located in the North Wing, this single-person space includes a chair, yoga and prayer mats, and relaxation items. Please limit your use to 30 minutes at a time so this space can be available for everyone who needs quiet or privacy throughout the day. Reservations are available but not required.
If you need space for a small group, consider reserving one of our three study rooms. Each contains a table, chairs, and a whiteboard, so your group can collaborate on a project or review topics together. If all the rooms are in use, the North Wing is a non-quiet study space with tables of all sizes and rolling whiteboards. And remember the Student Lounge is always available for hanging out as well as food preparation and cleanup.
But if you want to study or work during the break, don't worry! The Law Library's online resources are always available. This includes our most comprehensive legal platforms, such as Westlaw, Lexis+, HeinOnline, and Bloomberg Law: remember, each of these requires your individual login (except HeinOnline, which uses your standard NIU single sign-on).
To get a head start on studying for finals, check out the many eBook study aids and guides in Aspen Learning Library and LexisNexis Digital Study Aids. Just use your Z-ID for Aspen, and your NIU login for LexisNexis. Two more great sources for legal eBooks are PLI PLUS and VitalLaw, which are both accessible using your NIU account.
Do you have a more specific topic or question in mind? The Law Library provides a wide assortment of databases and other websites, most available from anywhere. Or if your research is more interdisciplinary, consider browsing the University Libraries' vast resources across the academic spectrum.
Whenever the Law Library is open, someone is on hand to help, so please don't hesitate to reach out! Our friendly front desk staff will gladly answer your questions or direct you to other resources. They can also help you find and check out books and other items. During regular business hours, librarians are on hand to help with research and related questions. You don't even have to come on campus: students are welcome to schedule virtual appointments, or you can email lawreference@niu.edu for assistance.
