Law Library Policies and Procedures

Noise policies

  • Keep conversations to a minimum and low in volume.  If those nearby can hear them, the volume is too high.
  • Respect designated ‘Quiet Study’ areas.
  • Silence ringers on phones or set them to vibrate.
  • To take or make calls, please leave the library.
  • Tell library staff about inappropriate noise levels.
  • Library staff will ask those violating these policies to reduce the sound level. A second violation will result in being asked to leave the library.

Food, beverages and tobacco products

  • Beverages with lids are allowed in the library. No food is allowed in the library except in the Student Lounge, which is limited to College of Law students.
  • Put trash & recycling in designated containers.
  • Clean up spills promptly. Tell library staff if you need help with a big spill.
  • All smokeless tobacco products (including chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, or snus) are prohibited in the law library with the exception of tobacco lozenges.
  • All lighted smoking products, including e-cigarettes, are prohibited anywhere on campus by the NIU Smoke-Free Campus Policy.

The policies and procedures of the David C. Shapiro Memorial Law Library apply to all law library patrons: faculty, students, staff, and visitors. The law library reserves the right to update or modify these policies at any time and without prior notice.
