Law Library Policies and Procedures

Interlibrary lending to other libraries

The following are the Law Library's policies regarding loaning our material to other libraries.

Items available for loan or chapter / section copies free of charge:

  • Books
  • Government documents
  • Computer software
  • Audio/video materials

Items available for photocopying or scanning:

  • Journal articles
  • Reference and non-circulating materials (within Fair Use restrictions)
Items not loaned:
 
  • Reference materials
  • Reserve materials
  • Loose-leaf materials
  • Items designated as non-circulating

Loan periods and renewals

  • Most materials are loaned for a period of 45 days with 3 renewals possible.  Renewals should be requested prior to the due date.

Charges (to libraries, and to non-NIU requestors not affiliated with a library)

  • Book loans - free to U.S. requestors
  • Photocopies and scans:
    • MALLCO, CLAS affiliates: free
    • All others:
      • 50 or fewer pages: free if sent via email or other electronic means (e.g., OCLC Article Exchange)
      • 51 or more pages, or paper copies required: contact us for rates

Shipping

  • Loans are sent by USPS Library Rate only or ILDS
  • Photocopies and scans are sent via email or other electronic means (e.g., OCLC Article Exchange).
    • Additional charges may apply for fax or paper copies shipped via USPS.
