Finding Children's and YA Literature

Our library contains materials in a number of languages, such as Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and many others, as well as multilingual books. 

To find non-English language titles, follow these steps:

1. In the NIU Libraries Search bar, click on the magnifying glass at the right side of the screen.

2. On this new screen, click on “Advanced Search,” located to the right of the search box.

3. To search for children’s or young adult books (also known as juvenile books), use the filter Subject search. Try typing in Spanish language Juvenile in the search bar at the right, then select Subject from the “Any field” dropdown menu at the left. Finally, click on Search in the lower right corner of the box.

4. If you want ebooks, use the filters at the left. Under “Availability” select “Available online” and under “Language” choose “Spanish.” Then, click on “Apply Filters” at the bottom of the screen.

5. For print books, use the “Location” filter at the right. Because children’s and young adult books are shelved in a variety of areas, you might need to check boxes for a number of locations, such as NIU—Children’s and YA Collection--4th FL; NIU—Contemporary Children’s and Family Collection—1st  FL; or NIU—Reserve Collection. Then, under “Language” choose “Spanish” and click on “Apply Filters” at the bottom of the screen.

5. For print books, use the “Location” filter at the right. Because children’s and young adult books are shelved in a variety of areas, you might need to check boxes for a number of locations, such as NIU—Children’s and YA Collection--4th FL; NIU—Contemporary Children’s and Family Collection—1st  FL; or NIU—Reserve Collection.
