Law Library Policies and Procedures

Lost or damaged library materials

Replacement charges will be charged for lost or significantly damaged law library items at the following rates:

  • Circulating items: $100.00 or the cost of the item (whichever is greater).
  • Reserve items: $100.00 or the cost of the item (whichever is greater).

Billing procedures:

  • If you are an NIU student, lost item charges will be forwarded to the NIU Bursar's Office. Failure to pay these charges may delay registration, sending of transcripts and proof of graduation.
  • If you are not affiliated with NIU or the College of Law, lost item charges will be billed through NIU Accounts Receivable.

Items borrowed from other libraries:

  • Items borrowed from Founders Library are governed by Founders Library policies.  Any NIU patrons blocked at Founders will also be blocked from borrowing College of Law library materials, and vice-versa.
  • Items borrowed from I-Share or OCLC libraries may have overdue fines and lost or damaged item charges that differ from the law library's. These charges are set by, and must be paid to, the library that lent the material, not the law library.

Patrons with more than three lost items on their record may be blocked from borrowing materials at the law library.
