Law Library Policies and Procedures

 Circulating items

  • Most items in the circulating collection may be checked out for four weeks to students and Authorized Borrowers and sixteen weeks to faculty.

Non-circulating items

  • Non-circulating items must be used within the law library unless staff grants permission to use them elsewhere in the law school (such as within faculty offices or student activity offices). The items may not be removed from Swen Parson Hall.
  • The law library reserves the right to retrieve non-circulating items that have been removed from the library, even in the absence of the borrower. If items are not found in the locations designated at checkout, the borrower's privilege to remove non-circulating items from the law library may be revoked.

Reserve items

  • The Browseable Reserve Collection, located near the Circulation Desk, contains heavily used titles and popular study aids such as West's "Hornbook" and "Nutshell" series, LexisNexis' "Understanding" series, and Aspen's "Examples & Explanations" series. These items circulate for one day.
    • During reading and examination periods, titles in the "Understanding" and "Examples & Explanations" series may be checked out for four hours only.
  • Course reserve materials are kept behind the Circulation Desk.  Items circulate for either a four-hour or one-day period as designated by the instructor.

Renewals and recalls

  • Items checked out from the law library or I-Share libraries can also be renewed by logging into your HuskieSearch My Library Account.  If you see a "Not Renewed" message, your item(s) must be returned by the due date (or, if past the due date, as soon as possible).
  • When the library is open, renew items in person at the Circulation Desk or by calling 815-753-0507.
  • Items you have checked out may be recalled if they are needed for course reserves or by another patron.

The policies and procedures of the David C. Shapiro Memorial Law Library apply to all law library patrons: faculty, students, staff, and visitors. The law library reserves the right to update or modify these policies at any time and without prior notice.
