Scholarly Communications: Transformative Agreements

About: Transformative Agreements in Scholarly Publishing

What is a Transformative Agreement (TA)?

Transformative agreements are those contracts negotiated between institutions (libraries, national and regional consortia) and publishers that transform the business model underlying scholarly journal publishing, moving from one based on toll access (subscription) to one in which publishers are remunerated a fair price for their open access publishing services.  — cOAlition S

TA's are not new, but they are increasingly replacing traditional contracts as libraries and publishers work to negotiate mutually sustainable agreements that increase equitable access to published scholarly knowledge.

The Library proactively supports Transformative Agreements with publishers when the agreement is financially viable and provides the faculty with comprehensive open publishing options.

TA's also foster community stewardship through open access and a shift away from paid subscriptions that place published research articles behind paywalls. In addition, these agreements help faculty who have research grants which may require the publication of research in an open-access journal.
