Help for Online/Off-Campus Students: Satellite Campuses

NIU Outreach Centers

NIU has two outreach centers in the Chicagoland area: Rockford and Naperville. These centers also function as library satellites or learning resource centers (LRCs).

In addition to many specialized databases, the LRC provides access to I-Share, FirstSearch, and the internet offering a wide variety of resources for students to complete class assignments and research projects. Rapid delivery (every Monday and Wednesday) from Founders Memorial Library in DeKalb to the regional centers ensures that materials are available to meet student needs. NIU students can pick-up and drop-off print materials requested from the DeKalb campus or through the I-SHARE system at these centers with their NIU OneCard (Off-campus/online students may also pick up OneCards at these locations). LRC staff members are available to assist patrons.

Requesting Materials

For Books and other Physical Items

Use HuskieSearch to request physical items available from the NIU Library or from I-Share. Visit the Ordering Books & Physical Items tab for more information. Important Note: Off-campus faculty, staff, and students must select the proper PickUp Institution (NIU) and PickUp Location (Naperville or Rockford) to ensure timely delivery of materials.

If an item is not available through the NIU Library or I-Share, fill out the NIUILLiad Request Form, accessible from your My Library Account. Visit the Ordering Books & Physical Items tab for more information. Important Note: Off-campus faculty, staff, and students will need to designate their Campus Affiliation on the Change Personal Information page of their ILLiad account to ensure that physical items are delivered to their preferred location.

For Articles

Use the NIUILLiad form, accessible from your My Library Account, to request the full text of articles not available through NIU Library resources. Visit the Ordering Articles tab for more information.

Delivery of Books and Physical Items to Branch LRCs

Branch LRC patrons should notify Information Delivery Services (IDS) via phone at 815-753-9245 or email at illdept@niu.edu to ensure their name is added to the branch LRC delivery list.

Please allow a minimum of 5-7 business days for delivery of books owned by NIU libraries. Books from other lending institutions take longer. It is the patron's responsibility to return library materials to the branch LRC in a timely manner for forwarding to IDS by the due date. Be aware that you are responsible for materials until they are discharged.

Contact your branch LRC for hours of operation and closure dates during the semester, finals, interim and holidays.
