Sample Bluebook Citations

Federal Administrative Law - CFR & Federal Register

Code of Federal Regulations:  R. 14 (p. 143) and Table 1.2 (pp. 236-248), B14 (p. 22).

Cite to the title, C.F.R., part and year.  Use this when referencing the entire part.

  • 7 C.F.R. pt. 322 (2017).

Cite to the title, C.F.R., part and section, and year.  Use this when referencing a section within a part.

  • 7 C.F.R. § 322.3 (2017).

If the rule or regulation is commonly known by its name then the name should be given: R. 14.2(a) (p. 143).

  • FTC Credit Practices Rule, 16 C.F.R. pt. 444 (2017).

Federal Register:  R. 14.2(a),(b) (p. 144) and Table  1.2  (pp. 236-248).

Cite to the volume number, Fed. Reg. (name of publication), page at which the regulation or rule begins, page where the material to which you are citing is located if pinpoint citing, and exact date (this is because the Federal Register is a daily publication). 

When the Federal Register indicates where the rule or regulation will appear in the C.F.R. give that information parenthetically, otherwise omit that portion.
